An Angel's Prayer - 2-part women (or duet)

A few weeks ago, my dear friend, Amy Callister, and I were asked to sing a Christmas song in our women's class in church. We poured through all of our sheet music and even spent some time at the music store, and just didn't find anything that felt right. One thing led to another, and this song was created. This song ponders upon the idea of being one of the angels who heralded the Savior's birth - I surely hope I was among them! I hope you enjoy this song at this Christmas time.

Our Testimony of the Gospel Truch (Children's Chorus)

I am assigned to co-direct the music for the children at church. A couple of months ago, the children were learning about testimonies. I had the kids write the parts of their testimonies on the board, and then we turned them into words for a song. The kids also chose a time signature (we had been learning that songs are usually in 2, 3, or 4) and the first two notes of the song. I went home and added some notes and we ended up with this song. It is written by the LDS Quail Hollow Ward Primary.

Treasures (for young women's chorus)

This song was written for the Chelemes Ward Young Women's Camp in 2011. The theme was about treasures, but the thought that continued to come to my mind was to remind the girls not only about seeking treasures, but that the girls themselves are treasures - our Heavenly Father's treasures.

Watching O'er the Manger (SAB Choir and Children's Chorus)

This is a Christmas song for SAB choir and children's chorus. It is very simple and a nice option to include children. The words reflect upon Mary, Joseph, and ourselves as we think about the birth of Christ.

Will He Heal Me (Cantata for choir and piano, soloists, flute, and cello)

This was the turning point for me writing music. Just before I wrote this, I had never had much success writing anything satisfactory. I had special difficulty coming up with melodies, and then writing out anything else was very arduous. I had majored in choral music education, so I felt I had the knowledge, but the ability to compose evaded me.

I am LDS, and twice a year we have a church-wide general conference, which is broadcast on television. As the conference approached, I began praying earnestly that the Lord might grant me the ability to compose music.  After a spiritually filling Saturday of conference, and my heart full of this prayer, I awoke Sunday morning with a melody and words in my mind. I grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled out the tune and words. It became the them of this cantata, which, in answer to my prayers, I was able to write in about 4 months.

Since that time, I have gone through periods of greater and lesser output, but if I seek out the Lord's help, I am able to write now. It was a great answer to my prayers, and I truly hope those who perform and listen to these songs can feel the same Spirit that touches me as I write.
